2025 Champion for Education: Mr. Michael Bowens
The Dooly County School System is proud to announce Mr. Michael Bowens as the district’s 2025 Champion for Education, an honor presented through the Fourth Annual Chattahoochee-Flint RESA Champions for Education recognition program. Mr. Bowens was celebrated during the regional luncheon on December 9, 2025, at the John M. Pope Technology Center at South Georgia Technical College in Americus, Georgia.
The regional program recognizes individuals who go above and beyond to support public education. Mr. Bowens, a lifelong Dooly County resident, was selected for his decades of service to the school system and the broader community. He has served as Vienna’s City Administrator for the past 11 years, following a 36-year career with Georgia Pacific and earlier work with Armstrong World Industries.
Mr. Bowens’ connection to local education spans more than three decades. He served on the Dooly County Board of Education from 1991–2002, and after an appointment by Governor Nathan Deal, rejoined the Board in 2017, where he continues to serve as Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA) Exemplary Board member. Known for his steady leadership and common-sense approach, he is Dooly County Board of Education’s most experienced member.
His service also includes leadership roles with the Southwest Georgia Empowerment Zone, the Dooly County Chamber of Commerce, the Dooly County Industrial Development Authority, and the Upper Flint Regional Water Planning Council.
“Mr. Bowens is smart, thoughtful, humble, and an undeniable force for good in our community,” said Superintendent Dr. Sherrod Willaford. “His service to our schools and to Dooly County as a whole reflects the true spirit of a Champion for Education. We are grateful for his leadership, his example, and his heart.”
The Dooly County School System congratulates Mr. Michael Bowens on being named the 2025 Champion for Education and thanks him for his continued dedication to students, families, and the community.

Exciting News!!

The Dooly County School System is celebrating growth on the 2025 College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI), released by the Georgia Department of Education. Results show increases across nearly every indicator at the elementary, middle, and high school levels — a reflection of the district’s ongoing commitment to instructional excellence and student success.

At Dooly County Elementary School, scores rose in every category, including a jump in Content Mastery from 33.0 to 38.4 and Progress from 68.5 to 78.7. The school also earned an outstanding 96.7 in Closing Gaps, showing that students are achieving growth across all learning groups.

Dooly County Middle School continued its upward trend, with Content Mastery improving to 39.7 and Progress at 84.3, including a remarkable 99.1 in ELA progress. Readiness also rose to 76.9, signaling that students are on track for future success.

At Dooly County High School, gains were equally strong. The school saw Content Mastery increase from 24.3 to 33.5, including a major leap in Math from 11.74 to 36.62. Progress rose to 73.7, and Pathway Completers climbed to 79.75, demonstrating more students are graduating ready for college and career.

“These results are a testament to the dedication of our teachers, leaders, and students,” said Superintendent Dr. Sherrod Willaford. “We’re proud of the work happening in our classrooms every day — and this data shows our district is moving in the right direction.” Dooly County Schools outperformed the state in Closing Gaps at both the elementary and high school levels and exceeded the state in Progress at the middle school level.

Chief Academic Officer Holly Black added, “Our system’s focus on literacy, numeracy, and whole-child supports is creating meaningful change. These gains show what’s possible when everyone — from teachers to families — works together for student success.”
