Mr. McKenzie said, because he didn't have the greatest emphasis on school and academics growing up due to having to work with the family on the farm, he didn't necessarily think he had the fundamentals to accomplish all that he did in the academically in the sciences and in business. However, when graced with the opportunities, he said he spent the time and gave the effort and attention needed to achieve, even if it meant staying in to study for the test or giving up social time to be able to compete in the classroom with others.
He shared that he and Mr. McBride started their Sta Soft Fro business with $500 and spent their weekends selling their product to local barber shops and hair salons until the product grew into the M & M company and the national phenomenon that it became.
